Lady Gaga debuted her latest single featuring R. Kelly. “Do What U Want” was released today and currently sits at #1 on iTunes. What do you think of the new song?
Lady Gaga took to Twitter today to blow off some steam and respond to the critics.
Gaga did not stop short of taking a jab at Katy Perry. As most people know, “Roar” reached the number 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 while “Applause” only peaked at number 4. “Applause” may signal a decline in Lady Gaga’s popularity as she prepares to release Artpop.
Lady Gaga may not be able to outcompete Katy Perry or even Miley Cyrus, but she can still expect Artpop to debut at number 1 when it is released. Gaga seems to be more focused on responding to critics and selling records than to satisfying her fan base.
Gaga still has an overpowering fan base who will buy her albums no matter what, but the pop star shows troubling signs. Her insecurities and alienating behaviors may ultimately hurt her sales. Lady Gaga may want to refocus her attention to her upcoming album before things get ugly.
Katy Perry’s third studio album PRISM comes out Tuesday (Oct. 22) and the world can’t wait to see what the pop star has in store. The fun-loving singer is ready to show the world that she is back and ready to “Roar”.
PRISM definitely has a more mature tone to it. Many songs detail Perry’s divorce with Russell Brand. “By the Grace of God” even reveals suicidal thoughts that Katy had following her public break-up. However, instead of dwelling on her unpleasant experiences she manages to send a message of independence and self-worthiness. Katy Perry is known for having upbeat material, and she stays true to that image while also revealing personal struggles.
Other songs from PRISM sound exactly like music from her Teenage Dream era. “This is How We Do” and “Birthday” seem completely reminiscent of the Katy Perry everyone knows and loves. Unfortunately these songs seem childish compared to the rest of the album. They may end up as hit songs but they don’t progress Katy as an artist.
Katy Perry also delves into the familiar pop-dance tone that most modern pop music seems to entail. “Walking on Air” and “Dark Horse” combine powerful vocals with dance-heavy beats, similar to “E.T.” on the Teenage Dream album. These songs are definitely catchy but they’re not unique to Katy, so it’s good to see the she did not overly focus her album on this mixed genre.
Either way, Katy Perry continues to produce catchy tunes with PRISM. Katy has the potential to see as much success with this album because it follows the same formula as Teenage Dream. Perry is so successful because her songs contain building verses with unmatchable choruses, and PRISM is no exception.
Overall PRISM combines pop, dance, alternative, and disco tones throughout. PRISM isn’t revolutionary, but its message resonates with everyone. I suspect that Katy Perry will continue to dominate the radio with this new music. PRISM is a solid album that progresses Katy as an artist, and that’s exactly what a third studio album should do. I give PRISM an A.
Katy Perry’s album PRISM leaked on Tumblr yesterday. “Unconditionally” is set to be Perry’s second single off of the album which comes out October 22. The single should be released this week. I sense another #1 hit on the way.
On Monday HOAX films released before and after photos of Britney Spears’ new video “Work Bitch” which ignited an Internet firestorm. The photos showed a skinnier Spears after the alterations. This isn’t the first time Britney has been accused of digitally altering her videos either. “Gimme More” received similar criticism. It’s certainly not uncommon for celebrities to have their bodies photoshopped, but Brit may be one of the few to alter their videos.
I personally do not care if Spears isn’t as thin as people want her to be, but if the rumors are true it’s unfortunate that Spears herself agreed to have the video altered. It simply sends the wrong message. It is probably safe to assume that Spears had her body airbrushed at the advice of her manager, but she should have said no.
Spears meanwhile has announced the title of her next album. “Britney Jean” will be released December 3. “Work Bitch” was the first single off the album, but the album does not necessarily hold the same tone. Spears has talked about producing more personal music, and Will.I.Am claims “Work Bitch” was not a reflection of the upcoming album. That is a relief to hear considering “Work Bitch” was not a chart-topping song. Hopefully Britney has some pop hits awaiting her eight studio album.
